Rev. Ron's Movie Reviews :21 Jump Street

We've all heard the criticism about how Hollywood has run out of ideas.  Sequels and prequels, remakes and reboots--what is a person to do?  Is it possible to make an original film anymore?  21 Jumps proves it is.

Rev. Ron's Movie Reviews:

Chronicle had the unlimited potential to be a fantastic superhero-style story about some young teenagers who end up gaining amazing powers but it ultimately destroys itself by eliminating elements like character, story and plot in favor of a cheap gimmick.

Rev. Ron's Movie Reviews:The Music Never Stopped

It's amazing the power music has over us.  Everyone has those moments where a song can take us back to a time and a place in our past.  Sometimes a song can trigger a great moment you had with your friends or a song can remind you of the one that got away or the time you fought Bigfoot (that hasn't happened to you?).  The point is that music can play a big part in a person's life and is more than just something to sing along to while you're in the shower or to serve as a soundtrack while you're making babies.

Rev. Ron's Movie Reviews: Mary and Max

Mary and Max - 5 out of 5

Claymation isn't a genre of animation often associated with bittersweet, depressing stories (Davey and Goliath doesn't count because the fact it exists at all is depressing in itself).  However, Adam Elliot made a name for himself doing just that.  It began in the late 90s with his family saga that told nearly auto-biographical short stories of family members that always leaned in the direction of "onion cutting" levels of tear flowing.  Take my personal favorite in this short film trilogy Brother.

After winning an Academy for the Geoffrey Rush narrated Harvey Krumpet, Elliot went on to make his first feature length film...but keeping his unique style and themes of being bittersweet intact.  Mary and Max tells the story of a sad little Australian girl named Mary (voiced by Toni Collette) who has emotionally distant parents and no real friends.

Rev. Ron's Movie Reviews: Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter

Vampire hunter?  More like vampire...um...what's synonymous with "boring" and rhymes with "hunter?"

Captain Kronos:  Vampire Hunter is a 1974 film about a expert swordsman (according to all online synopsizes) who--you guessed it, hunts vampires.  The film follows the hunter and his hunchbacked assistant who arrives in a small village that is under attack.  Young women are having their youth taken from them by the unholy beasts of the night...or, in this case, the day because these aren't your Hollywood vampires in classy capes and pale faces.

Rev. Ron's Movie Reviews: Henry's Crime

Henry's Crime is a romantic comedy heist film about a guy (Henry) who is framed in a bank robbery and ends up paying the price by serving hard time.  After he is released, he decides he going to actually go through with the crime he paid for and rob the bank.  Along the way, he falls in love with an actress trying to make it big (that's where the romantic comes into in this comedy heist).  And did I mention that Keanu Reeves plays Henry?  That's right...this is a romcom that stars Neo from The Matrix.
